Factoid that may interest only me

Alex Rodriguez of NY Yankees makes $28M this year.

The entire Florida Marlins team makes less than $22M this year.

Ironically, Florida Marlins have won a more recent World Series (2003) than the NY Yankees (2000). (Source: AP Stories and Yahoo Sports)

Sadly, it will take a long time for the newly formed Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket franchisee holders to realize that money does not win championships. Ask the NY Yankees who have been the top spending MLB team since 2000 with no World Series wins.

PS: There is no salary cap in Major League Baseball (MLB) unlike other major sports in USA. Hence this difference in total team spend on player salaries.

Good point! But IPL franchises has no choice but to sign up stars to establish loyal followers for their franchise before thinking about getting some cheaper local talents to create stars. But the catch is that today's star value does not automatically translate to winning the championship for franchise, but at least that looks like the only option they have today. I would think over a period you will see more unknown/local talent in these IPL teams and who knows those guys may even choose not to represent country due to the fact that may already have max'd out on money and/or publicity by just playing for their franchise. My 2 cents.
